I can't help but watch acrobatic nuthatches when they hunt tree bark for tasty bugs and seeds. How do they manage to defy gravity the way they do -- hanging upside-down from branches, then hopping up and down sheer vertical trunks at top speed! I can't resist snapping their pictures with my camera. I turned one of those photos into an ink and engraving on white claybord painting to honor these athletic little birds. Completed in 2010, it is part of my "Backyard Wildlife Series" and graces the website of the Todd Bird Club (toddbirdclub.org) where he climbs down his tree as the page scrolls!
